James Cameron’s Avatar for iPad is a exploring combat game released by Gameloft.
This game has you may expect is a tie in to the movie of the same name. However, as we all know movies to games are often rushed and poor quality trying to sell on the name, is this the case here?
Yes and No, it is a good game, but a little rough about the edges.
The graphic and game play are generally very good and the user interface works well and it is easy to navigate.
The game does not follow the story of the movie itself, but follows it’s own storyline.
On the upside:
a) you are getting a beautiful and playable combat based adventure game.
b) The game is big, so you will not finish it in five minutes, this should keep casual gamers and the younger players going for a while.
c) If you liked Avatar, then it gives you a way back into that interesting universe.
On the downside:
a) The game feels rushed in places, with the character simply getting stuck on the map, and unable to move, so you have to restart the level.
b) Some of the levels can be a bit repetitive, jump, hit, run, repeat.
From what I have seen of the iPad version of the game it is really just an upsized version of the iPhone version with the same lack of polish. It would have been nice to see at least some enhancements, like Gameloft gave to NOVA for example.
Overall, this is a good game, and a welcome addition to the collection at £0.59. When it returns to full price, it may be more worthwhile getting the iPhone version, if you can stand the upsizing, or just give it a miss.
